Welcome, to all hair types!

This is an inclusive website, made to help educate people about their hair. My name is Afton, and I’m a former salon manager
and current ~science dork~ who is passionate about teaching people
proper hair care management by building a foundation
of understanding about how hair functions.

An educational website for those interested in learning about trichology: the study of the scalp and hair.

After doing your own hair care education and research, you may realize that a lot of the information out there is either incorrect, incomplete, or published with a bias: either wanting to sell products or otherwise market itself toward a specific hair group. This site is different, inclusive of all hair types, from all over the world, so people can start new hair care journeys with a solid foundation of knowledge about how their specific hair behaves. We highly recommend you start by looking at texture (otherwise known as width, or the size of each individual strand) and density (how much hair you have) before moving on to porosity (how open or closed your cuticle layer is) and pattern (the visual shape your hair has).

A special note on pattern: we have adopted the Andre Walker typing system, which ranges on an alphanumerical scale, from types 1A-4C, because of its strong presence and popularity in the beauty industry. However, it is important to note that pattern is merely the physical appearance of hair based on the number and shapes of the bends it has and that pattern does not, in any way, increase or decrease the value of your hair. Many resources, including Andre Walker, attempt to combine pattern with other hair qualities such as density and texture, which can lead to inaccurate analysis and confusion when discussing hair. Walker’s original typing system is somewhat flawed and hierarchical, and should be looked at as a loose guideline rather than a strict or final label; we are adopting the alphanumeric qualities of his system for the physical appearance of pattern only. This typing system is extremely popular, however, it’s also crucial to know that Walker has made public statements (that he later renounced) that show he privileges other hair types above type 4 hair, which is primarily seen in people of African origin. We do not in any way condone or endorse these viewpoints. To learn about other pattern typing systems, we highly recommend this article: https://www.curlcentric.com/hair-typing-system/ which covers Andre Walker’s system, the LOIS system, Naturally Curly’s system, and Fia’s hair typing system.
